Coding for freedom, again?

Webstock 08Hands up who’s heading to Webstock this year? Cool! I’ll see you there.

I’ve been looking forward to Webstock for a long time now and I still question their decision to hold it every two years. But the wait is over and tomorrow the conference proper starts and then wraps up on Friday evening. Sibylle has already attended one of the workshops and she got to show off her goodie bag at work yesterday. They look insanely cool!

I think I’m most looking forward to Kathy Sierra, she was f…ing brilliant last time and I guess I’m not expecting anything less. She is breaking her “silence” at Webstock too. I feel quite honored she chose Webstock to do so.

Last time I tried my best at live-blogging the event and got quite a good response for it. I’ll see how it goes but there is a good chance you’ll see a dozen posts on this neglected blog for the next couple of days. ;)

P.S. I’m still perplexed by that slogan. Are we really coding for freedom?

I’m betting that it’s held alternate years with govis, becuase nz is too samll for 2 web related conferences, even if one is just to do with boring old government. and not fun things like ice cream and pretty tshirts.

Yeah I figure that’s probably the case. But Webstock is just too much fun to wait 2 years for :)

John – the debate is open as how often we’ll hold Webstock. You think yearly would be good?

Hi Mike, thanks for taking the time to comment!

I do think yearly would be good. But that is purely from an attendees point of view. Webstock06 was awesome. A really inspiring and energising event with a lot of networking going on. Why wouldn’t you want that every year :)

But, if it is that you need to run it 2 years so you can sell out every time… then maybe that makes more commercial sense. I just want more more more! ;)

may be we need to all pitch in and have someone working on webstock full time all year round?

so we can have 1 a year?

of course is there enough sponsorship money in nz to allow us to have yearly webstocks?

There probably isn’t enough sponsorship money in Wellington for one each year. But there is easily enough if you did one in Auckland, and then one in Wellington each year.

but would it be webstock in auckland?
or just another tech conference

Oh gosh Sue – I’d hope it would be Webstock in _New Zealand_ without the Wgtn prejudice ;)

It’d probably be better in Auckland. Create a bit of industry diversity in the attendees. 90% of Wellington attendees are in Govt.

Not sure about that “90%” – but certainly it has a “Wellington-centric” feel about it. A travelling road-show is a cracking idea … maybe the mini-Webstocks around the country?
